Wheels for the disabled

The Rotary Club of Knights Pendragon, in conjunction with the Rotary Club of Northcliff’s Wheelchair project, have been distributing wheelchairs to disabled persons for more than 20 years. Mandla, our most recent wheelchair recipient is located in Orange Farm.

The Northcliff Rotary wheelchair project is one of the most successful and long-running initiatives in the club. It began in 1993 and is still going strong. The idea for the project took hold after members realized that there was an urgent need for wheelchairs in the Johannesburg area.

The call for wheelchairs received a positive response from Rushmoor Rotary in the United Kingdom who collects old wheelchairs from agencies such as the Red Cross and national health hospitals who had old wheelchairs in storage depots across Southern England. These are periodically shipped to Northcliff Rotary, South Africa, who distributes them countrywide through affiliated Rotary clubs. More than 22 000 wheelchairs have been provided to worthy recipients across South Africa, free of charge.
