Chris Hani Baragwanath Paediatric Burns and Intensive Care Unit Upgrade Project
The Chris Hani Baragwanath Paediatric Burns and Intensive Care Unit is a specialist referral facility catering for paediatric burn victims from Gauteng and the North-West province. Some 400 paediatric burns patients are admitted annually, with about 25% requiring specialist intensive care, mainly as a result of open flame burns during the winter months. These patients often endure protracted hospital stays, with multiple theatre visits to clean, debride wounds and place skin grafts. Primary and secondary infections frequently complicate cases and may be life threatening, especially in younger patients. The rehabilitation of these patients is often long-term and challenging, especially when critical areas such as the face, hands, feet and joints are involved. The Rotary club is raising R2.5 million for essential exercise and other equipment to be supplied via the De’Lescaut Children’s Foundation, a Non-Profit Organisation (NPO No. 117-896) that serves this paediatric burns unit.
Bethany Home for Abused Women and their Children
Located in Bertrams, Johannesburg, the Bethany Home for Abused Women and their Children is very successful in rehabilitating abused women, physically and mentally, teaching them work/business skills, finding them work and helping them reintegrate into society as contributing citizens. The home is well managed by a dedicated team led by Mrs Bridget Edwards, which achieves a 70% success rate of re-integrating, rehabilitated and self-sufficient women into society. Bethany Home is a registered Non-Profit Organisation (NPO No. 001-362) which offers sponsors and donors the benefit of Section 18A tax certificates and corporate BBBEE scorecard credits. The Rotary club is raising RK60 necessary for internal painting, replacement of gutters and downpipes as well as the glazing and painting the windows of the home.
